A premium backgrounds component that takes any image and renders it as a grid of ASCII characters in real time.

TL;DR

  • Real-time ASCII rendering of any uploaded image.

  • Configurable resolution, character set, colour mode, and contrast.

  • Best for dev tools, AI infrastructure, technical brands, and terminal-flavoured sites.

What ASCII Matrix Image Does

Drop an image into the component, and the renderer samples the pixels and maps them to ASCII characters based on luminance. The result is a live grid of characters — not a baked PNG — so you can change resolution, character density, and colour at design time and the output regenerates immediately.

Most implementations support both static and animated modes. In animated mode the characters can drift, glitch, or react to cursor proximity, depending on the props.

Why Use It

Generic stock photography is the visual debt of the modern web. Every B2B site uses the same five Unsplash hero shots, and visitors stop registering them. ASCII rendering converts a generic image into something that belongs unmistakably to your brand — particularly if your brand sits anywhere near developer tools, security, AI infrastructure, or fintech.

Features

  • Real-time pixel-to-character rendering.

  • Adjustable character density (resolution).

  • Custom character set — pass any string of characters to use as the palette.

  • Colour modes: monochrome, original image colour, or single-tone tint.

  • Optional drift and noise animation.

  • Cursor-reactive distortion (optional).

  • Responsive scaling.

  • Honours prefers-reduced-motion.

FAQ

Does the source image get embedded or processed at runtime?
The image is processed at render time inside the visitor's browser. The original file is loaded, then drawn into a canvas and sampled.
Will it work on mobile?
Yes. At smaller widths you may want to drop resolution so individual characters stay legible.
Can I use my own character set?
Yes. The character palette is exposed as a prop — pass any string and the renderer uses it as the luminance ramp. Japanese kana, custom logo strings, or any UTF-8 sequence works.
